Speed Dating for IT
John Halamka, MD, MS, a seasoned blogger and industry expert, writes about the BluePrint Health IT Innovation Summit in his well followed blog, "Life as a Healthcare CIO."
As hospitals seek improved patient outcomes, reductions in costly medical errors, and lower malpractice expenses as well as government payment incentives for Electronic Medical Record (EMR) investments, MedCPU provides a decision support platform that complements the EMR by providing real-time guidance and prompting to clinicians when deviations from clinical best practices and compliance occur.
Unlike other EMR-based tools that require clinicians to change their workflow habits and miss the majority of clinical data that is provided in unstructured formats, the MedCPU Advisor incorporates free-text and dictation with structured EMR entries into its decision support platform, enabling clinical workflow while capturing 100% of the relevant clinical documentation.
The MedCPU Advisor is a “smart button” that displays on a user’s existing EMR user interface. It extracts, reads, understands and analyzes in real time all clinical data, including clinicians’ free-text notes, dictation and structured field entries. It then prompts clinicians on deviations from evidence-based clinical guidelines and compliance requirements based on the system’s embedded “Knowledge Base”. Most importantly, the MedCPU Advisor complements the existing workflow of the clinician by supporting the most practical method of documentation and working within the framework of the EMR. The system analyzes both real-time and historical documentation to provide clinicians with the complete clinical picture of the patient. The MedCPU Advisor is also designed to work with any EMR with minimal integration.
The MedCPU Advisor is an enterprise platform technology that can be used for a number of applications, including real-time clinical decision support for high acuity settings such as obstetrics, care pathways for pathologies such as stroke and diabetes, and compliance and regulatory requirements such as Meaningful Use, Value-Based Purchasing, and billing/coding. The MedCPU Advisor is ONC certified for Meaningful Use reporting.
